Especially in today's world, nature plays a crucial role for people - particularly in (big) cities. Children's relationship with nature in particular is suffering from a progressive alienation from nature. Stress, hectic lifestyles and constant sensory overload are also increasingly fuelling the need to experience nature and healthy living conditions. Urban green open spaces in the immediate neighbourhood are therefore invaluable for city dwellers. Experiences in nature can have positive effects on many levels.
Nature experience areas provide children and young people with a tangible and diverse natural space. The variety of materials, shapes and colours stimulates the imagination and awakens a thirst for adventure. They learn new things and can expand their own boundaries.
The first nature experience space in Berlin was created in 2009 as part of a public participation programme in the Park am Gleisdreieck. There is no play equipment here, but children can experience plants, animals, soil and water on an area of 5,000 square metres. The modelled clay landscape, which is regularly flooded with water, is particularly exciting for children. It invites them to splash and muddle around.
The nature experience area in the Park am Gleisdreieck is freely accessible at all times and can be visited free of charge. Its central location makes it a great destination all year round.
