In the coming years, the site of the former Tegel Airport will develop into a showcase project for sustainable and future-orientated urban development. Grün Berlin is taking on the task of gradually qualifying the former airfield and taxiway (Tegeler Stadtheide). An open space with leisure and research facilities is being created on an area of 220 hectares as a nature and landscape conservation area.
Education and field research, recreational use and nature conservation in harmony
The Tegeler Stadtheide landscape park is home to rare flora and fauna: wheatears, skylarks, heathland plants and dry grassland are just a few examples of protected biodiversity. Preserving the valuable heathland and strengthening biodiversity through sustainable landscape management - for example by grazing sheep - is the basis for the qualification of the area.
At the same time, the vastness of the landscape park also makes it an experience for Berliners. What makes it special: In future, it will be possible to explore a nature reserve from different distances and using all the senses. The transformation from tarmac to landscape is an evolutionary process, the fascination of which can be shared with interested parties at an early stage as part of a wide range of environmental education programmes. The focus is on experiencing nature with all the senses.
An initial invitation to the Berlin public was issued as part of the Long Day of Urban Nature in June 2022, where interested parties were able to gain an impression of the developments on a guided bike tour.
Gradual opening
The plans for the Tegeler Stadtheide landscape park envisage a partial and gradual opening to the public. For further development, the areas will first be cleared of explosive ordnance. Ecological construction monitoring will ensure the necessary sensitive implementation. Since May 2023, it has been possible to visit the Tegeler Stadtheide on guided tours.
The urban open space thus complements the Urban Tech Republic research and industrial site around the former terminal and the Schumacher Quartier, which is designed as a resource-saving residential area.
