In the new nature experience area at the south-eastern entrance to Tempelhofer Feld, children can experience nature with all their senses. The existing hills of the Tempelschlucht have been modelled, there is a water pump with a river course as well as sand and clay for free play and mud. Large boulders provide new perspectives on the expanse of Tempelhofer Feld. Natural materials invite visitors to experiment and explore. The approximately one-hectare site offers many opportunities to hide, run around and learn about plants and animals.
Nature experience areas are green open spaces without predetermined play equipment. Free play in the immediate vicinity of nature promotes children's creativity, concentration, social skills, motor skills and awareness of nature. Without time pressure, they can develop their own play ideas and gain elementary experiences in and with nature. The adults deliberately stay in the background and leave room for the children's imagination and creativity. In the densely populated city, spaces for experiencing nature offer a stimulating natural environment that children rarely find in their everyday lives in Berlin today.
The Tempelschlucht was built over 10 years ago as part of a project by Freilandlabor Britz e.V. and ‘Grün macht Schule’ with children, young people, parents, neighbours and friends. The area has now been further developed by the Campus Stadt Natur team and the nature experience area advice centre of the Stiftung Naturschutz Berlin: A new nature experience space has been created and opened in June 2022.
The nature experience area is open to the public and daycare centres, primary schools and other interested parties can register for free guided taster sessions with the Campus Stadt Natur team.
